Background:

Construction started on the Global Guardians' orbital base in early 2000.  Construction was completed four years later, after which the team relocated from their old base in Geneva, Switzerland.  The official name is "United Nations Sattelite 2"; it was originally given it's nickname ("The Watchtower") during the "How Does The Real World Affect Comic Book Writing" panel at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con.  The name quickly spread to general use around the world.  It wasn't until Bungie used the nickname during her appearance on "The View" that it became "official".

Bungie's (and later the rest of the team's) adoption of the nickname sparked a copyright infringement lawsuit against the Global Guardians by TimeWarner, Incorporated.  "The Watchtower" is the name of the base used by the fictional superhero team "The Justice Society", published by TimeWarner subsidiary Detective Comics.  The suit was settled through third-party arbitration.

Facilities/Capabilities:
The Guardians' orbital sattelite is a high-tech marvel made of lightweight metals and space age plastics.  It incorporates alien technology scavenged from Xorn battleships and purchased from K'krikki'i traders.  The base supplies private quarters for each of the Guardians, as well as shared living space such as kitchens, and dining rooms.  Recreational facilities (including a gym, a carefully maintained hydroponic garden, a swimming pool, and a private movie theater.  In addition, the core of the sattelite houses the group's "Danger Room", an advanced training facility that allows them to keep their fighting edge.

Description:

The Watchtower is a rough sphere whose equator is encased in a rectangular superstructure.  Radio and radar antennae are placed at both the "north pole" and "south pole" of the station.  The sattelite maintains a slow spin (so that the view out the windows varies... MaxiMan got bored with seeing nothing but stars on one side and Earth on the other).  The entire thing has been painted bright white, with black markings indicating the official name of the sattelite.  (Gunmetal has promised to go outside and add the nickname to the hull for months, but has yet to actually do it.)
